A writer who recognizes his own genius and isn't afraid to talk about it - falls somewhere between the giddy heights of literature and the gritty depths of journalism. Before the casino job and the boss with the soft, sibilant voice, before the financial default made rubles worthless and emptied the shelves of cigarettes - "there were no cigarettes in the stores, so it was really like the end of the world" - before all that, Stogoff wrote a detective novel. He did it for the money. He was a reporter, and in the mid 1990s in St. Petersburg a reporter would write a story for a beer. Someone told him he could get $1,500 for a crime novel. His book was called Skull of Empire and he wrote it in a week. It sold 50,000 copies. Someone even made it into a movie. |
